Returning from Europe, the Whigs Hit up Columbus
BY EVAN BARTSCH
The Whigs look to take command stateside once again as they push their sophomore release, Mission Control, to the masses. Always certain to be melodic and catchy, the Athens, Ga. rockers hold nothing back in their live show, however. Mid-tempo darlings quickly swirl and churn into a heavier rock brew, carrying you away from your age and manners.
Once "the best unsigned band in America" in 2006 by Rolling Stone magazine, the Whigs have since been signed by Dave Matthews’ indie label ATO Records, played Letterman, and toured Europe. Not too shabby for group of travelling musicians that regularly dine at Wafflehouse and combat van induced bed-head before shows.
Frontman Parker Gispert is one part raspy vocals delivering straight-laced lyrics, while jamming and strutting like an off-balance Pete Townshend. High energy Tim Deaux is the bass playing utility man, jumping in on keys and guitar when needed. But the crown jewel and the one to watch (and feel), is the guy on the kit, Julian Dorio. Esquire magazine’s 2007 “Drummer of the Year” will have you tuned in and toned up as the Whigs drop by the familiar confines of The Basement on August 6th.
