Live Review – The Raconteurs w/ Guests

Commodore Ballroom – Vancouver, BC
The Commodore Ballroom has certainly seen its share of great bands over the past 75 years. Acts like Tina Turner, Dizzy Gillespie, The Clash and even Nirvana have graced its hallowed walls and now rock / indie / bluesmen The Raconteurs can be added to that ever growing list with a mesmerizing set preformed to a sold out (and stoned out) house.
After a couple initial gigs in Tennessee, The Raconteurs hit the road and continued their latest tour with a stop here in Vancouver last Sunday. From the look and smell of the place (it was 4/20 after all), their arrival could not have come at a better time.
On hiatus from his “other” band, Jack White got the crowd going immediately by simply walking out on stage and plugging in his guitar. Decked out in a brown suit covered with sewn on silver bone patches, he seemed a bit shy at first, but quickly warmed up to the crowd.
Everything just felt right as The Raconteurs launched into a 70’s style rock revival, bringing back the days when each song was an anthem in itself. This was “new” classic material executed by true music professionals and duly noted in the faces of the awestruck audience.
They played recent classics like “Blue Veins,” “Level” and “Steady as She Goes” and added plenty of new tracks like “Top Yourself” and “Attention” from their new album Consolers of the Lonely. Jack made it look easy with singular style and showman bravado, but this did not overshadow the rest of the equally talented musicians also in The Raconteurs.
Singer/guitarist Brendan Benson stood out with his distinct voice and effortless playing skills, while drummer Patrick Keeler and bassist Jack Lawrence kept the beats pumping steady and the people sweating for more. Also joined by Dean Fertita on keyboards, they sounded full, tight and unbelievably good.
I honestly feel sorry for those of you who missed this show. Where else but in Vancouver can you enjoy an evening of great live music and share it with 900 or so of your “best buds?”
